“I met a fellow who had a Ferrari Lusso, and I’d never encountered anything that was quite like that Ferrari… the sound, the style. It was mind-boggling after a simple car like a Porsche. Then he traded the Lusso in on a 275 GTB, and when I got a look at that GTB, I fell in Love.

I bought his GTB in New York, and I sent it to Europe. I spent six months in Europe with the car, and that was great… driving on the little country roads in France, moving through the villages at night with the stone walls reflecting the sound of the V-12… it was a thrill.

I shipped that car back to the States, drove it cross-country to LA and traded it for a new 275 GTB/4. The four-cam had just come out, and there were none in this country. I took delivery at the Modena factory in 1967. I had a business in London, so I kept the car in England with me for a year, and then I brought it back to Malibu.”

This particular 4-cam was ordered new by Peter Smith in Blu Ultrascuro with black leather and a chrome roll hoop, and as noted above, he collected the car at the factory. Photos from the day Smith took delivery of his new car show the final touches to the covered headlights.

Smith retained his prized 275 for over five decades, a period in which he owned countless other cars including a 250 LM. The 275 proved to be too good to part with, both in design and drivability. The Ferrari was color changed to dark red long ago, and spent much of its time in the Pacific Northwest being used quite sparingly. Despite Smith’s residence in Hawaii, he would often visit his 275 and it was regularly sent to Dennison International for routine service. The Ferrari was always meticulous maintained and exceptionally well cared for cosmetically as well.

The 4-cam accrued just over 30,000 miles in Smith’s ownership, and remains a highly original example to this day. Aside from the single repaint, no other major cosmetic work was carried out, and the Ferrari has never been apart, reupholstered or modified in any way. This is quite simply, one of the very best presented and best sorted 275s.

We have known this car, and looked after it, for decades. Despite numerous attempts by interested buyers over the years, it wasn’t until 2021 when Smith decided it was time to let the Ferrari go. We were fortunate to place the 275 in one of the US’s greatest collections, where it was stabled with some of the other most desired models of the marque.

The Ferrari is accompanied by a Marcel Massini report, a large original file of documents including a magazine cover feature, the build sheets and related factory documents, the period photos of the car at Ferrari as well as the original manuals and tool kit.

This is undoubtedly among the very best 275s in existence, and a unique opportunity as a totally genuine, low-mileage, two-owner, numbers-matching example.
