Seattle - Santa Barbara - New York
- A fully numbers-matching example
- Superb “nut and bolt” restoration by noted marque expert
- Presented in its factory original color scheme of Weissgrau with red leather
- Complete with books, tools, fitted luggage and a significant restoration file
- One of the finest restored 300SLs on the market
This 300 SL Roadster was originally delivered to Mr. F. Wilkinson through the Studebaker Packard agent in New York. The car was strikingly finished in DB158 Weissgrau, “white gray” with a red leather interior - a very subtle and sophisticated color scheme.
In the 1960s, the Mercedes was sold to an Arizona resident, G.R. Golsorkhi, before passing to Brian Whitcomb, also of Arizona. It remained with these two gentlemen for decades and eventually in 1998 the car was bought by Peter Thomas, a noted 300 SL enthusiast and trader. At the time, the car’s recorded mileage was just 46,072. The following year Thomas sold the car to a German collector, Gunter Lack, and in 2008 it was bought by Gunter Speier.
In 2013, a prominent German collector tasked Axel Schuette with finding a pure, numbers-matching 1957 Roadster as a candidate for a complete restoration. With a desirable original color scheme, limited ownership and mileage, and all of its original major components (including the frame, engine, body, gearbox, both front axles, steering box and rear-end), the car was purchased and entrusted to specialist Jurgen Kassen for complete disassembly and restoration.
The multi-year project was completed in late 2017 at a cost of over €420,000, the equal of which would be significantly more today. Invoices and roughly 3,000 photos of the project accompany the car. The result is truly exceptional.
Today, with just 1,587 km on the restoration, the car remains in exceptional condition. It was recently fitted with correct-type luggage finished in matching red leather, and is further complete with a toolkit and owner’s manuals as well as the comprehensive restoration file.
One would be hard pressed to find a finer restored example on the market today, particularly of such a pure and correct car.
